It had been a weird day. The sun was setting on another hot one in Arizona. Chris wasn’t celebrating, but he was marking the end to a chapter, and he was doing this by overlooking the same canal he had been at when he’d caught up to the man who’d been exposing himself to women. After the morning meeting with Officer Rose, Chris had gone on to meet another officer, this time a detective, who’d taken his statement. He never had seen Officer Rose again that day.

He spoke with Luca over the phone, finding that the man was pleased with how everything had turned out. Chris didn’t share his concern about how quickly the case had wrapped up or how easily the conclusion had come, although Luca did sense how unenthusiastic Chris was.

Chris thought about these things as he laid his hands on the rails overlooking the canal. Couples were running, some cyclists being in the area, as well. This brought a small smile to Chris’s face.

Maybe he was being hard on himself again like Mrs. Mendoza was always saying. Maybe he had done an amazing thing. He knew for sure how much he wanted that to be true. After all, with his own dark sexual history, he wanted to think that he could make amends to the world. Especially to victims of sexual assault. He should have been over the moon. He was someone trying to make amends to those who’d been victims of sexual misdeeds, which was something that should have been bringing him great joy. But then, maybe it was that importance of things making him so adamant that he get it right.

He wasn’t bothered because he didn’t care about what he was doing. He was bothered because he cared too much about what he was doing and wanted to make sure it was the right thing.

“Hey!”

Chris turned around to see who was calling him. It was no one. It was a woman across the road from him—screaming at a man. Chris couldn’t make out the man, but he could see that he had on the same colored hoodie as Chris had seen on the guy the day before, and this time, he had long sleeves on. One of his hands was moving furiously below his waist. Damn it. He was right. The wrong guy had been captured.

Fuck this. Chris ran over to the shocked woman. He hid as much as he could and was soon quickly upon them.

The man in the hoodie saw that Chris was making a beeline towards him, and zipped up his pants and began to run away.

“Stop!” Chris yelled as the hooded man tried to make his escape.

Chris was already tired and knew that the man was about to get away. So, in a last-ditch effort, Chris gave everything he had and made a forward leap towards the speeding man. He would either tackle the man or slide face-first into the gravel. Fortunately, Chris’s hands grabbed onto the back of the predator’s waist midflight and brought him down, both men sliding in the dirt as they hit the ground.
